Appearance: Abelinda is a rather curvaceous woman and only coming to stand at 5'2". She claims most of her height was taken away to give her better curves, which part of her hates with a passion. Her hair is the color of ravens feathers and with wild spiral curls when it‘s about to rain or humidity is down; otherwise it falls to her shoulder blades in soft waves. Her skin tone is dark due to her heredity and loving being outdoors. Her eyes are a dark brown when in one of her happier states, so for most of the time her eyes are a black in aggravation or anger. Something that most males might find their eyes wandering to are her breasts, they are rather large, even with her trying to down play them with the dresses of the times. Her hips and breasts have gotten nothing but wider since her marriage and child bearing, another thing she blames Jessup for.
Keeping up with the times while being seen in public, Abelinda is usually seen in some of the best fashions she can afford. High neck dresses, corsets, pantaloons, petticoats and a cronolette hold the large skirts in a fashionable trend, highlighting her hips and thighs while causing a rather large trail down the back. Her favored colors to wear are reds, and blues, although every now and then she’ll wear a few browns and greens in the mix. She favors the fingerless gloves of the time, and often wears them out. While working she is glove-less and wearing a thick apron over her skirts and bodice.
While riding out she will don on the wear of a man. Trousers with leather chaps under camisoles and corset are her favored items. As well as a leather vest and perhaps thigh length leather jacket. This is just easier for her to ride in and she looks down her nose at any woman that may snob her for such disdainful thoughts on her appearance. In all reality, she doesn’t really care what other women think, or men for that matter. It is her pride that keeps her up with fashions, and the fascination with layers to keep Jessup more at bay.
Personality:
Having come for a rather large family, Abelinda has learned to use her mouth and to use it well. She will speak her mind, loudly, and not caring who will hear. She fights for what she thinks is hers, whether it be a watermelon in the back of a farmer’s wagon, fighting a snake for a rabbit or fighting for her family. Witty, intelligent and fast to spout off at the mouth, Abelinda gets herself into more trouble than what she may be worth. She is blunt, to the point and rarely sugar coats anything.
Pride is her weakness, freedom the thorn in her heart and love the rainbow’s end just out of her grasp.
She cares deeply for all those around her, but fears getting hurt. This is another reason why she speaks her mind and often says and does hurtful things to those around her. Her family life was harsh, her first marriage was unwanted and unnecessary and it has made her a rather bitter woman. Those that she only shows her unending love to are her children, she dotes on them and spoils them every chance that she may get. Still her teasing and spiteful tongue may lash out at them though.
Abelinda is always looking for trouble, a fight to pick and to win. She usually does win too. Quick with her temper she boils down quickly if the offense is minor. Give her something that endangers her family or her lifestyle and she’ll hold the grudge against you until she can exact her revenge. There are times when she cannot talk her way back out of something, and that is when Jessup comes to save the day -much to her dismay.
Jealous, she cannot stand the thought of another woman having what is hers, though she won’t admit it out loud. One of her inner fears is ending up alone, and though she has only thought about ending up alone once in her life, she still fears such. Love is another thing that does not come easy to Abelinda. It grows slowly and has to jump through many hoops in order to get her attention.
Abelinda hates bland food, it is a weak substitute for real food in her eyes. She cannot bear the thought of wasting anything and may be thought of as a pack rat because of this. Eventually, the item is used, much to her amusement and confirmation of her ways. She can only read the major words such as ‘price’, ‘sale’, ‘for hire’ and the like. No one has ever really taught her how to read English. Not being able to read English does not mean that she does not know the language. She knows it well enough to get by with her wit and sharp tongue. She knows Spanish well, English moderately well and she is learning a few words in German thanks to Gretchen.
Likes: bright colors, healthy hair, razors, rabbit stew, jalapeños, travel, learning, snakes, watermelons
Dislikes: dust, controlling men, fat, too many questions, whores, bugles, large insects with far too many legs
Special Skills/Weapons Used:
Abelinda can give a mean shave, the closest any man has ever gotten guaranteed (with her tongue lashings or with an actual razor). She can also make a mean stew with just about anything. The use of razors and knives she is very good at, even throwing them. She can use a pistol, her aim is not all that bad if she has time to study her target and get it’s movements down. Rifles she is ok with, not half as good as she is with a pistol because of the length and bulky nature.
Weaknesses: She cannot keep her mouth shut to save her life unless Jessup is getting that dark look in his eyes. She angers quickly and over the smallest or biggest things, just depends on her mood. She can’t read or write English. She can read Spanish and write a little in it but her hand is chicken scratch. Abelinda can’t spell, or ask for help even when she obviously needs it. Family and what few friends she may have are quite dear to her, she’d be a wreck if anything happened to them.
PART THREE
Being born the sixth child of what would come to be a family unit of 13, counting the grandmother living with them to help out Guadalupe, was not one of the things Abelinda would have freely signed up for. It was hot the day she was born, her mother labored for quite a while in the house the family had behind the bank in Mexico City. Her father owned the bank, and he was over there trying to stay in a board meeting rather than try to run back and forth ever five seconds. Finally, after 7 hours of labor pains and screaming, Abelinda came out, screaming on her own and mad at the world. From then on she wouldn’t shut her mouth.
It didn’t take long for her to learn the hierarchy in her family. Her father brought in all the money and it disappeared under the mattress until they needed it or her mother wanted something. It was her mother that ran the house, ran the children and ran the man. Guadalupe loved her husband dearly though, you could tell it by how her tongue wasn’t as sharp with him and the look in her eyes, plus later on there was the tender touches that Abelinda would notice. Within the siblings it wasn’t the oldest, Beliarosa, that had the most power, it was Espiridiana the third oldest. Beliarosa was soft spoken, quietly doing her chores and not saying much to the others. Rocio was often in her own little world, bossing around Beliarosa but taking the bossings from Espiridiana. Lobo and Osias were male, and too young for Espiridiana’s harsh tongue.
As Abelinda got older, and younger siblings were born, she became quite the young woman. Her father taught her how to speak English, as he did all his children. Soon she became the worst of the siblings, putting Espiridiana in her place on her 13th birthday. From then on she ruled, she was listened to, and she was the boss and no one else could do anything with her.
The next year her father was shot in a robbery.
Greif stricken, Guadalupe moved her family north. She couldn’t stand the thought of living in a house so full of his memory. Moving to a small ranch town in Texas she took up being a barber, having cut her husband’s hair and her children’s’ hair for years she felt well qualified. Abelinda took to helping her in the store, while her brothers went to sell their services to the local ranches, and trackers. Beliarosa married a Mexican rancher and went to live with him. Espiridiana became a saloon dancer and whore. One day, Guadalupe turned to her daughter and told her she was getting married within the week, to go get fitted and they would tailor her old wedding dress to her body.
Abelinda was furious.
The only reason why she ever went though with it was because her sisters and mother shoved her into her dress. Her brothers gagged and tied her up, threatening to make her walk down the isle naked if she didn’t cooperate. Abelinda knew that her brothers were telling the truth.
So at the ripe age of 19 Abelinda was married to one Jose Cortina, the very brother of Juan Cortina. During the first war Abelinda pushed for her husband to take a side. Wanting him to either talk his brother down or to join with him, just so he wouldn’t be a coward. Doing neither, he was fine just sitting at home and trying to beat his wife into submission with words and fists. Neither worked, Abelinda hit harder and had a faster tongue. Finally her husband took a side and nearly got his fool self killed. Too bad he didn’t in Abelinda’s eyes.
She didn’t have to wait too long though. Her husband was fond of playing cards and cheating at them. Four men came into their house, Abelinda hid in a separate room while they talked with her husband. Keeping an eye on them she knew this was the end of some of them, if not just her husband. He was drunk, he didn’t give much of a fight as one shot him. It was then that she was spotted. Running out back and jumping on one of their horses she rode it until it fell dead.
Ripping off the saddle bags she rationed out the few measly scraps of food she had, took the revolver from the saddle and the few extra bullets and started wandering Texas on foot. She would rather die at the hands of nature or her own than by the hands of rotten, dirty men. Spotting a rabbit two days after she ran the horse in the ground, she began stalking it. Shooting it she heard two more shots, and found a Ranger saving her life by killing two of the men that killed her husband.
Following him around and being a general nuisance because Abelinda swore to never be alone again. At the camp that he took her back to, she couldn’t help but claim that they were married. Just to see if his buddies would believe it, and the idiots did! Jessup offered to take her to Austin, it was there that she was dragged kicking and screaming to the alter yet again. But this time, it was to a good man, so she couldn’t find fault in that...could she? She’d at least try to find fault in it.
After a few days of shock, Abelinda returned to herself. Before he could even think of breaking her in she made sure he knew there was going to be no such thing as breaking her in to his ways. She liked her ways, she’d stick with them. She’d let him live his life if he let her live hers.
Soon she became pregnant, much to her disbelief. Her former husband hadn’t been able to, but this man had done so within a short amount of time. As the baby grew within her, so did a tiny bit of respect for it’s father. His Rangering life was taking a toll on him, but she kept her mouth shut, why should she care anyways. Only when his horse fell on him did she say something. And that was enough to get him to stop.
It was her threat of leaving him and taking the children with her that got him to listening to her it seemed. So she passed on the news of a new settlement in California, a place that they should go. Packing up their things, they headed out to New Shelby. Settling in the old barber shop apartment, they began their new life.
